Asphalt Shingle Roofing Guide

The most common roofing material in Northern Colorado — here's what to know before you replace yours.

Shingle types

Three-tab shingles

Flat, uniform appearance and a lower upfront cost. Generally a shorter service life and lower wind ratings than architectural shingles.

Architectural (dimensional) shingles

The most popular choice for replacement projects in our region. Layered construction provides a textured look, longer service life and higher wind ratings.

Impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles

Designed to perform better against hail. Many Colorado homeowners select Class 4 in hail-prone neighborhoods. Some insurers offer premium discounts — confirm with your carrier.

Expected lifespan

  • Three-tab: typically 15–20 years in our climate.
  • Architectural: typically 20–30 years.
  • Impact-resistant: similar to architectural with better hail performance.

What a quality install includes

  • Tear-off of existing shingles and decking inspection.
  • Ice-and-water shield in valleys and at eaves.
  • Synthetic underlayment across the field.
  • Proper starter strip, drip edge and step flashing at walls.
  • Ridge vent or other balanced ventilation strategy.
  • Hand-nailing or properly calibrated nail guns.

Storm damage considerations

After significant hail or wind events, schedule a roof inspection. Damage can be subtle and may qualify for an insurance claim.
